Gambit was the first to arrive in the backyard. He was trying to sneak up on Mystique.

Mystique heard him coming.
"You're late. Let's get started," she said without turning around.
Mystique transformed into Wolverine.
"Let's start with hand to hand combat," she said. "You attack first."

"Ladies first," Gambit replied. "Well on second thoughts..."
He swooped down off the fence and swiped Mystique/Wolverine with his rod at her neck.
